The setback, material palette and form of the additional upper levels are respectful of the original building rhythm, reinforcing the distinction between existing and new whilst minimising the visual impact on the streetscape.

Key features of the original building are reinstated and refurbished to bring the building back to its original splendor.
The project involves the refurbishment and heritage conservation of the original ground floor, basement and commercial levels, along with the conversion of the top-most level of the existing building to a residential apartment. A new two storey three bedroom penthouse unit will be added to the top of the building. This upper level addition has been designed to respond to the existing building below and is expressed as a clear modern addition.
Originally designed by Frederick Menkens and constructed in 1906, the lower three floors of the existing building is of Federation ‘Free-Style’ and of local heritage significance. The top floor, by F. G. Castleden, was added in 1911 as the first stage of a planned additional two storeys. The structure was formerly known as ‘The Centre’ and part of its heritage significance is its association with the Dangar family.
