University of Newcastle Park on the Hill

The Park on the Hill project creates a series of linked social spaces within an existing car park at the University of Newcastle.

The project plays an important role within the University and in particular the Hunter side of Campus, by creating a lively ‘Student Social Precinct’. Integrated landscaping and colourful shade elements define active and passive recreational areas and have transformed an underutilized carparking area adjacent ‘Bar on the Hill’.

Movable outdoor furniture and playful shade structures allow the students to adapt the space to individual needs.

The Park on the Hill project provides informal student learning and social spaces that enhance the University’s Future Masterplan. The establishment of clear pedestrian pathways through and within the site was thus a key consideration and achieved through a collaborative design approach with the landscape architect. A series of connecting ramps and steps filter into the natural bush campus setting while areas of decking and artificial grass allow flexibility for large student events. Hard and soft landscaping elements provide a clear and legible identity to the space.
