St Josephs

CKDS was engaged by the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle to refurbish the existing Library at St Joseph’s Primary School at Taree, NSW.

An underutilised outdoor area was converted to an area of quiet reflection and meeting place which also referenced the strong connection of the site to the Biripi people who are traditional owners of the land on which the school is located.

The brief requested flexible teaching space to cater for contemporary learning and teaching from formal through to the self-directed learning.

In addition to the library upgrade, the St Joseph’s Learning Hub refurbishment also included the upgrade of a multi-purpose teaching space to expand the school’s ability to provide science and cooking lessons.
While no external works were proposed to the building, major changes were proposed to the interior to allow the existing classrooms, offices and library space to be opened and create flexible learning spaces with visual connection and supervision from a central Librarian space.
The areas are connected by a common finishes palette which lead the children through either the formal teaching, library and meeting spaces through to the informal reading nooks and steps.
